You needn't be a misanthropic, Lone Star-swilling gumshoe to know Colin Farrell has been sniffing around a lead role in the second season of True Detective for a while now.

And now it's official, with the Irish actor telling The Sunday World he’s picking up from where Matthew McConaughey’s Rust Cohle and Woody Harrelson’s Marty Hart left off in Nic Pizzolatto’s small screen masterpiece which lit up HBO earlier this year.

And if anyone can play a gritty detective, you can be sure it’s the former Hollywood hell-raiser, who time and time again has proven his best acting talents via darker and edgier roles.

“I know it will be eight episodes and take around four or five months to shoot,” the star said. “I know very little about it, but we’re shooting in the environs of Los Angeles, which is great. It means I get to stay at home and see the kids. These are early days and all the powers that be are working out locations and schedules and trying to lock down the cast.”

Unlike the last season, this one is apparently going to feature four central roles, meaning there's every chance Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Elizabeth Moss, all heavily rumoured for roles in the show, could yet line up alongside Farrell when shooting begins later this year.

If it's anything close to what we saw last season, we're in for a treat.
