Chris Evans steps down from Top Gear

The metaphorical ink was only just dry on our recent article bemoaning the disastrous overnight viewing figures for episode six of the new Top Gear when we spotted Chris Evans pop up on Twitter to announce that he was leaving the show.

Evans had signed a three-year contract to take over the show from the hugely-popular Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, but the series struggled ever since its launch show, with overnight viewing figures dropping week-on-week, save for a small upturn for episode six.

As yet it is unclear what will happen with the over presenters on the show, while the BBC have issued a statement:

With Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson and David Cameron all being rather less busy than a week or two ago, there'll be no shortage of candidates to take over the reigns.
