Bob Odenkirk on what to expect from Better Call Saul Season Two

Bob Odenkirk on what to expect from Better Call Saul Season Two
10 February 2016

Saul Goodman  – AKA Albuquerque’s most unscrupulous lawyer – himself tells us what’s going to go down in Season 2 of his Breaking Bad spin-off

From Rihanna (who got her mate Drake into it) to that bloke off the BT advert who streamed the whole thing in a weekend, everyone loved Breaking Bad.

So it was a serious [emoticon of an unhappy face] when it ended after five seasons in 2012, but an extreme [emoticon of a happy face] when prequel Better Call Saul aired on Netflix last year.

Better Call Saul tells the story of how lowly-but-honest lawyer Jimmy McGill chucks his morals in the bin to become the Saul Goodman we all love, with flashbacks to his dodgy hustling past as Slippin’ Jimmy, and glimpses into the future that leave us wondering where it all goes wrong for the future, skint, moustachioed Saul.

So, what does Season 2 have in store? With four more potential seasons before the story catches up with Breaking Bad, how far have we come in the evolution of Jimmy to Saul? “I don’t think I have a long way to go,” Bob Odenkirk tells us.

“I think I have a long way to fall. People fall fast when they get pushed. Saul’s way over there, Jimmy’s here. All Jimmy has to do is walk over the cliff and he’ll be down there pretty quick".

In person (ShortList travelled all the way to LA to meet the great man), Odenkirk comes across very much like Saul. He’s thoughtful and charming, minus the ghastly suits (“I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but I put on clothes that Saul would have said, ‘Yeah, tone it down’”), and with a bit more hair (“Whose combover came first? Saul’s came first. Although I’ve been losing my hair for 20 years”).

“Martin Freeman – we did Fargo together – I said to him, ‘Ah man, you know, sometimes acting is kind of fun, It’s not really work.’ And he goes, ‘Yeah. If you don’t try.’ I do have to make an effort with Saul. He goes through so much. Saul is the hardest role I’ve ever had, by a qualitative dimension.”

Better Call Saul Season 2 will be on Netflix from 16 February
