This is how Pixar uses music to make you cry

Sad scene. Sad music. Adding extra salt to your popcorn upon the death of Bing Bong. Sorted, right? Done.

Not so fast. It actually turns out that in order to make you cry, film editors play happy music over sad scenes.

A new video from the YouTube channel Sideways explains how Pixar has mastered this - and other tricks - to turn on the waterworks. It also delves into the interesting-sciencey-music bits of how to make music happy or sad, and why your tearducts respond as they do.

It's all very interesting but in fairness, we reckon killing everyone we have ever loved has a lot to do with it to. Stop doing that, okay, Pixar? Stop.
