Tom Wheatley of ShortList blogs about his progress so far

Tom WheatleyOn the final day we focussed on running. Luckily the local council had arranged an official 10km for the residents of Paphos which meant my competitive nature would come into play. As running is the only part of a triathlon I actually enjoy doing I was quite looking forward to taking part. The only problem was that in my excitement the day before I may have drank slightly more wine than I should have, that and the fact it was getting pretty hot.

After a strong coffee we made our way to the race start, a picturesque castle located at the end of the harbour. As we stood there downing water to fend of the increasingly searing heat I realised this was actually quite a big event. Groups of people in team running tops stood around stretching as the organisers spoke over loudhailers to prepare the event. It was far from the race I was expecting.

As usual I set off too quickly, trying to get ahead of the pack to get some space, a tactic that's inadvisable in 23 degree heat. By about 5k I was really struggling as I desperately tried to maintain my pace. After guzzling water whenever I saw it and splashing it over my face I finally finished at 45 minutes, a time far slower than I normally aim for. Judging by the rest of the runners it was a group feeling as many of the early runners stood panting at the end.

After the run I was well and truly spent, but pleased at the amount of training I'd managed to fit in to such a short space of time. Training for any event is difficult but none more so than a triathlon, and concentrating it all into one lump highlights the tremendous effort required by the body.

After the three days the amount I'd learned was mind-boggling, however having done it all in a setting as relaxing and enjoyable as the Almyra adds a level of comfort and enjoyment I've never experienced on a training trip. Having the ability to sit by a pool and look over at the sea with a beer just moments after a gruelling fitness session has a very positive affect on the psychological aspects of camp.

This is the first triathlon camp I've been to and for someone relatively new to the sport I found it enormously useful. There are learnings I'll take with me into my training for the next few months which will no doubt (hopefully) have a large impact when it comes to race day. To take part in future holidays you would need to be at a certain level, it isn't for beginners, but for those looking for a place to spend some time perfecting their skills it's an impressive option. The main beauty of holding it at such a resort being that it has something for everyone. As well as the pools, restaurants and spa they host a selection of kids clubs as well as activities around the Paphos area.

The next Active Holiday with Thanos Hotels will take place at their Anassa resort. Information and how to book can be found here.
