We like classic old grounds as much as anyone but we also love to see a shiny new enormodome open its doors. Here we count down the ten most exciting sports stadium scheduled to open in 2016.

  • The 10 new stadiums we can't wait to see in 2016

    Allianz Stadion, Vienna

    Team: Rapid Vienna
    Capacity: 28,000
Best thing about it: It appears to have a giant Tube tunnel stuck on the side, on which fans can stand and have a drink. We're sick of stadiums with Allianz in their name though. There's at least three others.

  • The 10 new stadiums we can't wait to see in 2016 1

    Suita City Stadium, Osaka

    Team: Gamba Osaka, Japan (J.League)
    Capacity: 40,000
Best thing about it: The total cost is a mere £75m (the price tag for simply converting London's Olympic Stadium to West Ham's specifications is £272m). Bargain. It's also earthquake-resistant and will be used as a shelter and storage centre if there is a natural disaster. Let's see if the Hammers offer that.

  • The 10 new stadiums we can't wait to see in 2016 2

    Ice Arena Wales, Cardiff

    Team: Cardiff Devils (EIHL)
    Capacity: 3,000
Best thing about it: It's the smallest on the list but it's also the only one opening in the UK. It will be the most modern ice hockey arena in the country.

  • The 10 new stadiums we can't wait to see in 2016 3

    CSKA Moscow Stadium, Moscow

Team: CSKA Stadium (Russian Premier League)
    Capacity: 30,000
Best thing about it: The stadium has its own skyscraper based on the Europa League/Uefa Cup trophy. If Bristol City ever got round to building a new stadium it would be like them creating a giant Johnstone's Paint Trophy in the corner.

  • The 10 new stadiums we can't wait to see in 2016 4

    US Bank Stadium, Minneapolis

    Team: Minnesota Vikings (NFL)
    Capacity: 65,400
Best thing about it: It has windows that open to let the elements in, but also has a slanted roof to allow snow to slide off. Their previous stadium's roof collapsed under the weight of snow in 2010 so they've learned their lesson.

  • The 10 new stadiums we can't wait to see in 2016 5

    Arena 92, Paris

    Team: Racing 92 (Top 14)
    Capacity: 32,000
Best thing about it: It's that rare thing – a domed stadium in Europe. Will be the most modern club rugby stadium in the world.

  • The 10 new stadiums we can't wait to see in 2016 6

    Orlando City Stadium, Orlando

    Team: Orlando City SC (MLS)
    Capacity: 25,500
Best thing about it: Even though calling themselves 'SC' rather than 'FC' is an abomination, Orlando City are building a proper old-school football stadium that puts the soulless bowls some Premier Leagues clubs play in to shame.

  • The 10 new stadiums we can't wait to see in 2016 7

    Stade des Lumières, Lyon

    Team: Olympique Lyonnais (Ligue 1)
    Capacity: 59,500
Best thing about it: It'll keep in the noise the Lyon fans are known to make and will be a key venue at Euro 2016.

  • The 10 new stadiums we can't wait to see in 2016 8

    Piter Arena, St Petersburg

Team: Zenit St Petersburg (Russian Premier League)
    Capacity: 66,881
Best thing about it: This 2018 World Cup venue looks like an alien spaceship thanks to its retractable roof. It's three times the capacity of Zenit's current home.

  • The 10 new stadiums we can't wait to see in 2016 9

    Timsah Arena, Bursa

    Team: Bursaspor FC (Süper Lig)
    Capacity: 43,877
Best thing about it: It's a crocodile for God's sake.
