Stunning goal leaves MLS commentator underwhelmed

“AGUERRRRROOOOOOOO”

You know exactly what moment we’re talking about.

That's because a good piece of football commentary has the uncanny knack of staying with us after the match, rattling around our brain like an audible action replay and reminding us of an extra special moment with a shrieked syllable or two.

Which is what makes this commentary from the MLS all the more bizarre. Coming as Chicago Fire’s Conor Doyle fired his team into the lead with an absolute worldie of a strike from outside the box, pinging it into the top left of the net in the blink of an eye, the commentator barely reacts.

Describing how it reached the 'upper 90' like a montone supply teacher going on about physics, it's enough to make you think the man with the mic had a bet on the other team. Or just didn't care either way.

Then again, this is America, a land where balls being put through nets and points splashed on the scoreboard is a frequent occurrence. High scoring, lots of commercials. For many, soccer’s contrastingly low scoring factor is still one of the chief reasons it is still low down on the pecking order of US sports.

Who knows, perhaps the soccer commentator was off sick and they networked drafted in a basketball pundit. Whatever the reason, it doesn’t exactly make us any more convinced that Americans quite ‘get’ soccer.
