Well played, Southampton

Southampton kill over-elaborate transfer announcements stone dead with this brilliant spoof

Last summer was known as the year that transfer announcements in English football went too far.

But then this summer happened, and it became clear that we were oh so wrong.

In the last month, we’ve seen Aston Villa mock up a WhatsApp chat to announce the arrival of John Terry.

While Arsenal announced Sead Kolasinac with an acrostic. A fucking acrostic!

Oh, and then we had Stoke City doing this, for some reason.

Southampton know what’s up, though.

They know an over-elaborate announcement only works if it matches up to the level of the thing it’s actually announcing.

That’s why, as soon as they had some big news to share, they went all out to make sure they did it justice.

Southampton had been fairly quiet in the transfer market since the departure of Claude Puel, with new boss Mauricio ‘Saint’ Pellegrino (you know, like the fizzy drink!) making just one signing – Polish defender Jan Bednarek.

But they were just waiting for the big one. The announcement to send waves through English football.

We don’t want to spoil it for you, so without further ado…

Good job, Southampton.
