San Marino score first away goal in 14 years and the celebration is as epic as you'd imagine

Scoring an equaliser away at Lithuania isn’t the most fabled of events. Had Wayne Rooney done it, the England skipper might have got a collective pat on the back while waddling back to his own half. Worth three fist pumps at most.

Not San Marino though. Because last night something amazing happened.

Trailing by a one goal to nil at the start of the second half during a Euro 2016 qualifier away at Lithuania’s LFF Stadionas, San Marino scored a goal. A scrappy goal. Not a well-worked goal, but an away goal.

Something they hadn’t achieved in 34 away games, 3060 minutes of football and 14 years.

The celebrations were just as wild as you might have expected as the side who were on the wrong end of a ‘respectable’ 6-0 pounding by England last week ran to the bench to celebrate their man Vitaioli’s historic strike.

Whatever your opinion on the minnows of Euro qualifiers, the hazy aftermath is stirring stuff for any football fan.

Football being football, however, the hosts scored a winner in the second minute of injury time (the pain), cruelly denying what would have been San Marino’s fourth ever draw as they lost 2-1.

If this is what happens when they equalise, we want to be there when they win.
