Roy Of The Rovers Boss Subs Himself On, Scores Equaliser, Saves Penalty

We've all had those wonderful dreams. Stepping out onto the Wembley pitch proudly wearing our club's colours, lining up at the apex of a fearsome attack, toiling against the odds for 89 minutes before firing in a last minute 35 yard thunderbolt to win the Cup, before climbing the steps to gratefully receive the trophy, lifting it to the adoring cheers of an 80,000-strong crowd..

Unfortunately, for us, it will only ever be a dream.

But one man who now knows exactly what it's like to lead his team in the style of Roy Of The Rovers is Grays Athletic player-manager Mark Bentley. Watching from the sidelines as his team trailed 2-1 to Hampton and Richmond Borough in the Isthmian League Premier Division, he decided the only man who could rescue the situation was... himself.

And what an impact he made: rising like a salmon minutes later to score the equaliser from a corner, being mobbed by his team-mates. However, shortly afterwards, disaster struck: the Grays goalkeeper had to leave the pitch with an injury and no substitutes were left. Naturally, Bentley grasped the nettle and went in goal himself.

Miraculously, he managed to keep the ball out for the rest of the match, including saving a penalty, heroically leading Athletic to a creditable 2-2 draw.

Get Roy Hodgson on the phone, we've found our new Gerrard.

Watch clips of his career-best performance below and keep believing: one day that dream will (might) come true.
