Epicness comes as standard

Ndamukong Suh's Top 5 Super Bowl Moments
03 February 2012

This weekend is Super Bowl XLVI. One of the world’s greatest sporting occasions, this year’s match-up sees hot favourites New England Patriots take on their long-time rivals New York Giants.

Not being fully versed in the subtleties of American Football (we do know that you sack the quarterback for loss of yardage) we asked rising NFL star Ndamukong Suh of the Detroit Lions to pick us his top five Super Bowl moments.

David Tyree’s helmet catch

Super Bowl XLII

Going into the final two minutes of the 2008 Super Bowl the New York Giants were trailing the unbeaten New England Patriots 10-7. They had the ball and needed a score. With just over a minute to go they looked to be up against it, when wide receiver David Tyree pulled off a miraculous 32-yard catch. Pulling the ball in he began to fall back and was hanging onto the ball with one hand only. Somehow he nestled the ball against his helmet gaining a valuable first down. The Giants went onto score that vital touchdown and triumph, against all the odds, 14-10.

Antonio Holmes touchdown

Super Bowl XLIII

The next year, another incredible catch helped decide the Super Bowl. The Arizona Cardinals led the Pittsburgh Steelers 23-20 when Antonio Holmes made a stunning take at the back of the end zone for the winning touchdown. The play is still endlessly debated. Did Holmes have full control of the ball? Did both his feet touch the ground? Yes and yes. Pittsburgh became the first team to win six Super Bowls.

Kevin Dyson fails to make it into the end zone

Super Bowl XXXIV

Super Bowls have seen some dramatic conclusions, but none have been as thrilling as the end of the first NFL final of the new millennium. St Louis Rams were leading the Tennessee Titans 23-16. On their final drive the Titans had to score. With six seconds left and with no timeouts remaining the Titans were knocking at the Rams’ end zone. Quarterback Steve McNair threw the ball to Kevin Dyson, but just two yards from crossing the line he was tackled by Mike Jones. Dyson’s desperate attempt at extending the ball into the end zone is one of the most memorable images from any Super Bowl.

Tom Brady three Super Bowl wins

Super Bowls XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is an American Football legend. He’s appeared in four Super Bowls, winning three, and was named Most Valuable Player in two of those games. His fifth Super Bowl comes this weekend. He’s also shacked up with a lady by the name of Gisele Bundchen. This man was born under a lucky star.

Steve Young's six Super Bowl touchdowns

Superbowl XXIX

For so long San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young was in the shadow of his iconic predecessor Joe Montana. In Super Bowl XXIX he finally walked into the light, throwing an unprecedented six touchdown passes as the 49ers blew the San Diego Chargers out of the game. They won 49-26 and Young finished the game as leading rusher too.
