On the face of it, basketball and volleyball share no more in common than a simple spherical object and an unhealthy desire to put flesh on display (how are the Laker Girls still a thing?).
But not anymore, as Utah Jazz player Trevor Booker has just sent seismic waves through the NBA, a league already known for its outlandish moves and flair players, with what's being described as a 'volleyball shot' - a first for the sport at this level.
Already up by four in the dying seconds of the 2nd quarter vs opponents Oklahoma City Thunder, Brooker receives the pass with his back to the net, and instead of grabbing the ball, spinning and shooting, he ingeniously tapes the ball behind his head and into the net.
As the ball sinks in there’s near disbelief on the faces of both sets of players as they go about recommencing the game. Not least the man himself who can’t seem to believe what he’s just done. Which is at complete odds with his what he told the media after the game, claiming he'd been practicing the shot for years.
Now we just look forward to the US Volleyball team perfecting the slam-dunk in time for the next Olympic Games.
