There are 5 brilliant new songs you need to hear right now

We don't remember the middle of August being a particularly special time in the record label release calendar before - we're midway through festival time and everyone's too busy getting drunk in a field to release anything new. But there's clearly been something in the water over the past week, as five great acts have all decided to release excellent new tracks.

In a ShortListen special, one track of the day is not going to be enough, so here's five instead.

Green Day - Bang Bang

The Californian pop-punkers return with the first taste of their new album Revolution Radio - astonishingly, their twelfth - and after the mixed results of their previous triple album collection - this is back to business, with no nonsense power chords, Tré Cool's blistering drumming and Billie Joe Armstrong's distinctive vocals.

Disciples - Daylight

After a brief sojourn working with Calvin Harris on his brilliant How Deep Is Your Love, the London producers hit the day job again with another chilled out banger in the same vein as previous 2014 hit They Don't Know. Effortlessly groovesome.

Porter Robinson & Madeon - Shelter

Two electronic wunderkinds team up for this hotly-anticipated collaboration: 24-year-old US producer Porter Robinson hit fame with the single Language, before releasing the excellent album Worlds, while Frenchman Madeon (still only 22) released his acclaimed debut, Adventure, last year. Shelter is exactly what you expect - in a good way - huge synths, pumping compression and far more emotion than the average EDM track.

Bon Iver - 22 (OVER S∞∞N) [Bob Moose Extended Cab Version]

Justin Vernon, presumably finally tired of hanging out with Kanye West, has announced details of his third full-length, 22, A Million, due in September and has unveiled two tracks from it. By the look of the bizarre tracklisting, he seems to have been studying Aphex Twin track titles, and musically it looks just as intriguing. 22 (OVER S∞∞N) [Bob Moose Extended Cab Version] is rather beautiful, featuring some nice sax work, while 10 d E A T h b R E a s T ⚄ ⚄ (Extended Version) is altogether new territory, with smashed up Radiohead and Warp-style distorted drums and vocals creating a rather unsettling track.

Cubicolor - Dead End Thrills

Dutch producers Cubicolor produced one of our favourite songs of 2015 in the shape of Magnum and followed it up earlier this year with Falling. Now they've created another great track here with Tim Digby-Bell once again providing vocals. Like Bon Iver, there's more than a touch of the Radioheads about this one.
