The ShortListen: The Last Shadow Puppets (no. 232)

Comeback single from Alex Turner's side project

Who? The Last Shadow Puppets

What’s the story? There is no doubt that the return of The Last Shadow Puppets, the side project of Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner, with their first album in nearly eight years was, and still is, one of the most eagerly-anticipated musical events of 2016. So we're not quite sure how to put this, but the first taste of it - to our ears at least - is something of a disappointment. There's a good rollicking energy to it, but Miles Kanes' vocals are fairly melody-free and repetitive, while the orchestral parts - which were perfectly woven into the songs on the first album - seem like they've been stuck on top of the track. Maybe it's a grower, and we're certainly not going to judge what the album will be like yet, so take a listen and see what you think.
