New single Burn The Witch unveiled

The ShortListen: Radiohead (no. 305)
03 May 2016

Who? Radiohead

What’s the story? So after all the internet 'disappearance' nonsense, we're into the meat of the issue: the first new music from Radiohead since 2011's King Of Limbs. In contrast to anything on that dull mess of a record, this is an actual song, with a magnificent, brooding string arrangement - like a psycho killer is about to strike at any moment - together with an actual structure of verse and chorus, or at least as close to a chorus as we're going to get from Radiohead these days. Atmospherically, it's second-to-none: after all, this is a supremely talented bunch of musicians we're talking about here. There are some incredible moments in the new track: if the hairs on the back of your neck don't stand up when Thom Yorke unleashes that falsetto in the chorus, then you're dead inside. Excitingly, Colin Greenwood even reprises the bassline from Airbag in the second half of the second verse. So, is this hugely enjoyable? Yes. Is it as good as anything from their glory years - Airbag and all? Sadly, no and, as ever, to barely use the guitar work of Jonny Greenwood and Ed O'Brien is practically a crime. Still, it's a promising return indeed.

For fans of: Well, Radiohead

In three words: Promising return track
