Walsall teenager unveils jazzy new track

The ShortListen: Jorja Smith (no. 319)
26 May 2016

Who? Jorja Smith

What’s the story? A third track from Walsall teenager and a third demonstration that she has some serious talent. Following on from debut Blue Lights - which attracted huge attention from the entire music industry - and follow-up A Prince comes Where Did I Go? Like everything she's done, the song moves along at its own pace: the production is laid-back, stripped-to-nothing, jazzy and cool, simply supporting the song and Smith's expressive vocal. It would be tempting to throw the kitchen sink at such an obviously excellent artist  - more obviously-commercial material and production and make a grab for the charts - but wisely, she's playing it her way. Long-term, we're convinced this will pay off very nicely indeed.

For fans of: Amy Winehouse, Martina Topley-Bird

In three words: Sumptuous summer jazz
