The ShortListen: Donkeyboy (no. 204)

Norwegian pop masters return

The ShortListen: Donkeyboy (no. 204)
23 November 2015

Who? Donkeyboy

What’s the story? By rights, Donkeyboy should be enormous. Their 2009 debut album Caught in a Life is one of the all-time great lost pop albums, with three tracks - Stereolife, Ambitions and Sometimes - up there with the finest tracks crafted in the last ten years. You've probably forgotten it, but that year's X Factor winner Joe McElderry actually covered Ambitions for the lead track of his debut solo album, reaching number six in the charts; in addition, they co-wrote a track for Selena Gomez's most recent record. For whatever reason, though, they never got the exposure outside their native Norway that they deserved, but continue to release great songs, with Lost following Downtown as singles previewing their forthcoming third record. It's a gloriously stylish piece of tropical house, with more dance influences than a straight pop track. Understated, yet excellent, we're pretty sure the new record will be a must-listen.

For fans of: St. Lucia, Kygo, Sigala

In three words: Glorious tropical house
