The ShortListen: Beaty Heart (no. 252)

Psychedlic electro from Peckham trio

The ShortListen: Beaty Heart (no. 252)
15 February 2016

Who? Beaty Heart

What’s the story? We'll level with you guys, we weren't really fans of London trio Beaty Heart's first record, Mixed Blessings; being too twee and Nathan Barley-esque for our tastes. But the good news is that they have reemerged for another record, toughened up, and seemingly vastly improved. Flora is a dense, psychedlic blast of a track, using an M.I.A.-style sample, some dub effects and a great metallic synth riff. They've apparently been listening to "Lee Scratch Perry, Arthur Russell, Roots Manuva, Pharoah Sanders and Floating Points" and it's seriously paid off. They share management with Jungle, and if they produce a few more tracks like this, they could soon be matching their success.

For fans of: M.I.A., Jungle, Roots Manuva

In three words: Psychedlic electro dub
