The ShortListen: Band of Skulls (no. 269)

Heavy-riffing return from Southampton trio

The ShortListen: Band of Skulls (no. 269)
09 March 2016

Who? Band of Skulls

What’s the story? Southampton trio Band of Skulls have done it the hard way, touring relentlessly and building up a fanbase through old-fashioned word-of-mouth over the last five years and three albums of work rather than any enormous marketing spend or hype. They attempt to maintain the momentum by announcing the follow-up to 2014's Himalayan, with their new record called By Default and due at the end of May. This track, Killer, is the lead single and, while sadly not a cover of Adamski's all-time electro classic, is a rip-snorting three minutes of rock, with a beautifully spacious verse - and some proper old-school reverb-drenched drums, courtesy of producer Gil Norton - giving way to a riff-fuelled chorus. Brilliantly, French people can also pretend this song is called What Time (have a listen and it'll make sense).
