The ShortListen: Babeheaven (no. 254)

Woozy dream soul from London newcomers

The ShortListen: Babeheaven (no. 254)
17 February 2016

Who? Babeheaven

What’s the story? We'll be honest, we clicked on a link entitled 'Babeheaven' wondering what sort of NSFW delights would arrive on our screens. But fear not, they're simply a very promising new five-piece band from West London - and as soon as you start listening to their debut song, you realise that the name is quite appropriate, given the woozy, dreamy, heavenly sounds they create. Chiming guitars ring out, there's an XX-style sense of space (and those Jamie XX steel drums), while shuffling drums gently push things on. Singer Nancy's voice has a beautifully pure quality, with just a hint of early Laura Marling mixed with - again - Romy from the XX. An intriguing introduction.

For fans of: The XX, Portishead

In three words: Woozy, dreamy heaven
