New Dr Dre Album 'Coming this Saturday'

We haven't quite forgotten about Dre, but it's now been a long 16 year wait for a new record from the legendary hip hop artist.

With the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton on the horizon - it's released August 28 - his former bandmate Ice Cube revealed that Dre is going to release an album inspired by the film, and it's coming out this Saturday (1 August).

In an interview with Philadelphia radio station Power 99, Cube said, "It’s mega, you know, it’s Dr. Dre, it’s what everybody been waiting for. It’s definitely a dope record, and he’s dropping it all on the same day. It's crazy."

There is a soundtrack due with the likes of Kendrick Lamar and Eminem set to appear - it's not known whether this is the record that Ice Cube is referring to, but a movie soundtrack album would be unlikely to arrive before the movie had been released.

While producing a host of artists and guesting on countless others, Dre has only two albums - 1992's The Chronic and 1999's 2001, while his last one-off solo singles were 2010's Kush and 2011's I Need A Doctor. That's not to say he hasn't been busy though - he co-founded the Beats brand of headphones and music streaming service which was purchased by Apple in 2014 for a reported $3bn.

Meanwhile, he confirmed that an N.W.A. reunion tour - albeit without Easy-E, who died in 1995 - was still being talked about. "Yeah, there's a possibility for sure. We've definitely been talking about it. It's just really about promotors coming to the table and we put together something that works for everybody. It's definitely, definitely possible."

To get you in the mood, here's just a few of Dr Dre's many amazing moments over the years.
