Jimi Goodwin's Ultimate Playlist

Jimi Goodwin is nothing less than a Mancunian musical legend, initally producing dance tracks as part of Sub Sub, before they morphed into Doves, enjoying a hugely successful run of critically-acclaimed albums. Now striking out his own while Doves are on hiatus, he releases his debut solo album Odludek, an eclectic classic of a record, this week.

We caught up with Jimi to discover his Ultimate Playlist: the tracks that mean the most to him and the stories behind them.

Odludek is out now on Heavenly Recordings. Jimi will perform at The Great Escape, the UK’s biggest festival for new music, in Brighton May 8-10. Check out http://greatescapefestival.com for tickets and the full line-up

Favourite sad song

"It Makes No Difference - The Band, sung by The Band bass player Rick Danko. A beautiful heart-stopping song about love and loss."

Favourite movie soundtrack song

"Right now it's La Lucertola by Ennio Morricone from the film Una Lucertola Con La Pelle Di Donna, which translates as Women In a Lizard's Skin. Listen; anything by Ennio Morricone is flawless."

Favourite song from your childhood

"Cretin Hop - The Ramones. I saw this on the Old Grey Whistle Test around 1978. The program used to do these great end of the year shows and they played this with a crazy 1920s Black and white cartoon accompaniment."

Favourite song that no-one else has heard of

"There isn't a song in the world that someone hasn't heard, even if it's just the writer! But I like to think I've got a head start on some people with Go By Brooks By Sweeney's Men . It's a beautiful Irish folk song from Irish music legends Andy Irvine, Johnny Moynihan and Terry Woods, adapted from a Leonard Cohen poem."

Favourite club anthem

"The Dance - Derrick May. As soon as I hear the bassline kick in, I'm transported to the past and the future immediately."

Favourite song to hear at a wedding

"Chic - Dance Dance Dance. Yowsa Yowsa Yowsa."

Favourite One-Hit Wonder

"Billy Don't be a Hero - Paper Lace. It takes me back to being about 4 or 5 years old. Probably one of my earliest musical memories as my nana would get me to do my version of it."

Favourite lyric from a song

"At the moment it's "The paramedic thinks I'm clever 'cause I play guitar/I think she's clever because she stops people dying'" Genius! That's from Avant Gardener By Courtney Barnett."

Favourite current song

"Love Letters - Metronomy. I saw them play this recently at the BBC 6Music Festival and it was joyous!"

Favourite song from your own music

"The Cedar Room - Doves. It was the first thing we released, The Cedar EP in 1998. It was the song where we finally locked on something as a band. It coincided with the name change from Sub Sub To Doves. No going back: we were on a roll."
