The Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury has welcomed a number of surprise names over the last few years: Lionel Richie; Dolly Parton… and now... Jeremy Corbyn.
Yup, the Leader of the Opposition will appear at this year’s festival, founder Michael Eavis has confirmed.
Eavis told The Guardian that Corbyn will give a short speech on the main stage before introducing hip hop duo Run the Jewels, who paid tribute to the politician during a festival sets in Porto earlier in the month.
RTJ, comprised of Killer Mike and El-P, saw American politician Bernie Sanders introduce their 2016 Coachella set by video link.
“He’s got something new and precious, and people are excited about it. He really is the hero of the hour,” Eavis said.
Corbyn is also expected to join Labour MP Clive Lewis on stage in the Leftfield Tent during this year’s festival, having cancelled a scheduled 2016 appearance due to the result of the Brexit referendum.
We’d really love to see the festival organisers go all out and give him a full set, belting out “To the left, to the left,” “No May no May, Manamana” and “Labour Labour Labour Labour Champagne Labour”. Sorry, that’s all we’ve got.
The attendance at Glastonbury is expected to be in the region of 175,000, more than four times the number of people who voted for Corbyn in his Islington North constituency at this year’s General Election.
Rumours of Theresa May appearing in the wheat fields Green Fields are as yet unconfirmed.
