The clean-cut 2013 Tour de France winner harks back to the days of the gentleman rouleur

It seems that anything Bradley Wiggins can do, Chris Froome can do better. Froome’s attacking run up the Champs Elysees not only made it back-to-back British winners, but he’s already announced his intention to secure the titles again in 2014. Daunting? Not for a man who grew up hunting pythons in Kenya…

So your job this year was to match the achievements of Bradley Wiggins. No pressure, right?

“Definitely. I learned a lot about myself, about being in the leadership position of the Tour and how to approach things from the mental side.”

Did you find that leading the Tour gave you an energy boost?

“As soon as you’re in that position you can’t switch off in the race. When I was wearing the yellow jersey I had an added level of adrenaline.”

How did you stay calm when questioned about cycling’s past doping scandals?

“The peloton is standing together now, the riders are uniting and it’s not going to be accepted any more.”
