Google Announces Most Searched Terms Of 2013
17 December 2013

Every year Google announces a list of the phrases that have been most searched throughout the year, and 2013's makes for rather sad reading.

The most searched terms in the UK is a list dominated by death. Number one on the list is Fast & Furious actor Paul Walker who died in a car crash at the end of November, while Cory Monteith, who died of a drug overdose in July, was the fourth most searched term. The athlete Oscar Pistorius, who is soon to face trial for the murder of his girlfriend, was the fifth most searched phrase. Nelson Mandela, who died at the beginning of December aged 95, was the sixth most searched. Margaret Thatcher, the ex British Prime Minister was at number nine.

There are cheerier search terms elsewhere in the list. At number two was the iPhone 5s, which is sort of optimistic, while 'Royal Baby' was at number three (people presumably searching young Prince George before he actually had a name). The X Box One beat PS4 in searches, edging into number ten. The other two spots were taken by 'Grand National 2013' at seven and 'Universal Jobmatch' at eight, which is a government site to help people find work.

So the top ten is:

1. Paul Walker

2. iPhone 5s

3. Royal Baby

4. Cory Monteith

5. Oscar Pistorius

6. Nelson Mandela

7. Grand National 2013

8. Universal Jobmatch

9. Margaret Thatcher

10. Xbox One

The most search TV show of the year was EastEnders, edging Breaking Bad into number two. The most searched film was Man of Steel, somewhat surprisingly followed by World War Z, though perhaps that popularity was partly down to its gossip-rich troubled development. The two most searched songs were Harlem Shake and Gangnam Style, which is why we don't deserve nice things.
