Tom Hardy reveals new plot details for 'Venom', and it sounds exciting
11 December 2017

Last week we got the first tantalising glimpse of the costume that Tom Hardy will wear in the forthcoming Venom movie - but now even more juicy info has been revealed.

Hardy is due to star in the titular role, playing a character called Eddie Brock, who first becomes the Marvel villain Venom. For the unitiated, Venom is an alien symbiote that, when attached to a host, gives them incredible powers. The Venom Symbiote’s first known host was Spider-Man but, after discovering its true nature, he managed to separate himself. Its second host is Brock and, when they combine, they become Venom - and one of Spider-Man’s archenemies.

This is the broad story - but what we didn’t know until now was exactly what was going to feature in the movie, which is intended to be the first film in Sony’s Marvel Universe - which will run adjunct to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

However, Hardy has now revealed, via a recorded message for Sony’s presentation at the 2017 Comic Con Experience in Sao Paulo, that the film will be based on the Lethal Protector comic book series. He also revealed that it will be set in San Francisco and will be ‘important to the Marvel universe’ as a whole.

So what’s the story with Lethal Protector?

Well, it was published by Marvel Comics in 1993 and begins with Venom and Spider-Man agreeing a truce, with Venom moving away to San Fran. However, once there it turns out that Venom doesn’t just get an office job and settle down to a surburban existence - no, instead he is attacked by the son of one of his previous victims and hunted down by the Life Foundation, who want to use his symbiote to produce their own new ones, which eventually become five new symbiote villains: Scream, Phage, Riot, Lasher, and Agony.

Jenny Slate, Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed are all on board to star alongside Hardy. Ruben Fleischer will direct, while Kelly Marcel, Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner are in place as writers.

As to how the film will fit in with the MCU well, it’s complicated. Wiki puts it well by saying: “The intention was to begin a new shared universe featuring the Marvel characters to which Sony possessed the film rights, though Sony also intends for the film to share the world of Spider-Man: Homecoming, which is set in the MCU thanks to a special deal between Sony and Marvel Studios.”

So there you go.

It’ll hit cinemas on 5 October 2018 and is likely to be rated R - a 15 in Blighty. See you in the front row.
