Tom’s ready when you are, mate
It seems like ages since Mad Max: Fury Road came out, but it was only three short years ago. Still, in the world of Hollywood, that’s nothing, so it’s surprising we haven’t seen at least 12 sequels and a reboot already - pull your finger out, movie-people!
Or maybe the fingers have already been duly removed, for it looks like the sequel train might have already left the station. Tom Hardy spoke to Variety, and detailed his want to make more Mad Max movies, thank God.
“It was always the plan to do three of them, so I think we’re still waiting on being given the opportunity and the green light to go ahead on the next one. But when I engaged on that there was a plethora of material on it.
“Obviously it belongs to Warner Brothers so it would be them who green-lit it. But a lot of projects are in radial, you know you wait for something to land when it’s real, and as soon as it’s real we’ll jump on it.”
He also revealed his want for more of Fury Road’s stand-out character and fan-favourite, Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron:
“She’s a pretty compelling character, so it’d be great to tell her story. Her backstory is pretty interesting; we only allude to it in this movie. This movie is on the run, people don’t have much time for recreational talk.
“You have a sense of her having gone through stuff, that’s what the movie is trying to do. You know, you’re trying to put a lot of iceberg under the tip, I like saying.”
Maybe there’s scope for a spin-off? Theron’s character was by far the most interesting in the movie - even more so than Max, who doesn’t actually really say or do anything, when you think about it - so a solo movie could do well.
Regardless, Fury Road took about 20 years to be made, and the last Max film before that was in 1985, with Beyond Thunderdome, so it’s not exactly the fastest moving world (at least compared to the breakneck speed of the movie, anyway).
Still, those rusty wheels are at least in motion - fingers crossed they reach the bloody station.
