This is how a classic Star Wars reference is hidden in 'The Last Jedi'
20 December 2017

People have had very different reactions to Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi. Some have hailed it as the best Star War in decades, while some seem really implausibly upset by events in a film about magic space puppets who fight with lasers and make things fly. “This makes no sense!” they stinkily shout, aghast that the latest film in a series where a gorilla flies a spaceship and you can borrow money from slugs contains something they don’t see as realistic.

It’s quite good, The Last Jedi. It’s got everything you’d want from a Star Wars film. Except, on first viewing, one of the franchise’s most fun running gags seems to be missing.

Every Star Wars film contains the line “I have a bad feeling about this” at least once, or a slight variation on it, like a “very” or “really” thrown in there somewhere.

(NERDS: It’s said by Obi-Wan Kenobi in episodes I and III, Anakin in episode II, K-2S0 in Rogue One, Han Solo and Luke in episode IV,  Princess Leia in episode V, Han Solo and C-3PO in episode VI and just Han Solo in episode VII.)

But it doesn’t seem to be anywhere to be found in The Last Jedi. not in English, anyway…

In an interview, writer-director Rian Johnson has revealed that the line is in fact there, but spoken in incomprehensible droid beeps that mean nothing to human ears. Adorable sphere BB-8 says it, right at the beginning, to Poe Dameron when helping fly his X-Wing.

“It seemed like a fun character to deliver that line,” he said. “I think originally I had Poe respond, ‘Oh, I got a good feeling about it. Keep your chin up.’ And then I made it a little less explicit just to make it more fun.”

Dameron replies “Come on now, buddy! Only happy beeps!”

Later on, R2-D2 delivers a series of beeps that Luke Skywalker responds to in shock, saying “Watch your language!” - Johnson won’t reveal what the droid is saying there, describing it only as “Not fit for print”, but here are some guesses:

- “Oh, shit.”
- “Oh, fuck.”
- “Oh shit, fuck.”
- “Oh, fucking shitholes.”
- “Fuck my fucking fuck, shit, you bastards, fuck.”
- “Crikey! Fuck!”
- “Piss, you fuck, you big shit shitter, dick balls bum fanny, Star Wars.”
