As the latest big budget incarnation of Godzilla prepares to level as many jaws as skyscrapers when it hits big screens this week, we wouldn't blame you for sitting back in your plush IMAX chair and taking the incredible computer graphics for granted.

However, this clever video from film fan Jim Casey might just have you shedding a tear under those 3D glasses...

Chronicling the evolution of VFX in cinema from 1878 onwards, we're given flashes of some of the most screen-shatteringly inventive films of our time, from the endearingly simple fare all the way up to today’s mega blockbusters, sure to cause a lump in the throat for any cinephile.

And if the brusque clip of 1998’s Godzilla is anything to go by, we really have come a long way in a short time.
