Here are all the movie trailers shown during the Super Bowl
05 February 2018

It was the flippin’ Super Bowl last night - giant people running into each other, really big t-shirts with really big numbers on them, athleticism, sportsmanship, blood, sweat, tears. Hey, guess whether that sentence was written by a sports fan who knows loads about sports! If you guessed no, you guessed right!

Film studios have always used the Super Bowl broadcast - the most-watched thing on telly every year - to push out movie trailers, and this year was no exception. Check out every trailer from last night’s broadcast below.

  • Mission: Impossible - Fallout

The sixth Mission: Impossible movie is the first one to feature a returning director - Christopher McQuarrie did both this one and Rogue Nation, and the voice at the beginning belongs to the baddie from that one, Sean Harris. His voice is really, really weird. Other than that, this looks like more of what you’d expect from this franchise - big crazy death-defying stunts, Tom Cruise doing his trademark Tom Cruise face, Simon Pegg doing panicked one-liners about how badass Tom Cruise is, nice-looking cities looking all nice, and a plot that you don’t really mind not following. Plus Angela Bassett and Henry Cavill are in it, the former delivering cold-ass putdowns and the latter doing what looks like excellent punching.

  • Skyscraper

This has The Rock in it, doing the same King of The Dads thing as in San Andreas, so obviously we’ll watch it, we’ll watch it ten times, he is King Of The Dads.

  • Solo: A Star Wars Story

Looks good! Young Chewbacca, Donald Glover looking boss as hell, and very little else, but that’s plenty really. A full trailer is coming later today.

  • Avengers: Infinity War

There’s not much to learn in this brief 30-second spot - it’s mainly people being foreboding, lots and lots of forebodingness - but blimey, aren’t there ever such a lot of Avengers these days? Like, obviously this Thanos character is a pretty bad dude, but there’s like a hundred Avengers now, they could beat him by mass alone.

  • Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

SO MANY DINOSAURS. Loads of ‘em, plus explosions, so it’s not out of the question that this film will feature an exploding dinosaur, which is basically what the art form of cinema was invented for. Chris Pratt is in both this and Avengers above, so he probably had a pretty exciting evening. No sign in the trailer of Jeff Goldblum’s cameo, which is a pity.

  • The Cloverfield Paradox

  • A Quiet Place

Real-life couple John Krasinski and Emily Blunt star in this horror where humans are hunted by some kind of super-hearing monsters. They probably have something else horrible about them as well as really good hearing, because “really good listener” isn’t a monstrous trait at all, it’s a nice one. John Krasinski also directed this, and learned sign language for it.

  • Red Sparrow

Jennifer Lawrence plays a Russian super-spy in this thriller reuniting her with Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence. Basically Black Widow, from The Avengers, but with Jennifer Lawrence and swearing. Yep. That’s a formula for box-office gold.

Bonus: telly ones!

  1. 1.Castle Rock

Set in the fictional town where loads of Stephen King’s books are set, this TV series lifts plot points and characters from a bunch of his works and mashes ‘em all together. Fun! Well, not fun, probably more on the harrowing side, but good.

  2. 2.Jack Ryan

Another helping of John Krasinski, this time picking up the Jack Ryan mantle (previously played by Ben Affleck, Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford) for Amazon. It’s a newer take on Tom Clancy’s CIA dude, and has Lost co-creator Carlton Cuse behind it.

  3. 3.Westworld (season two)

HBO’s robots are back in this beautifully shot, arty trailer. Also, the bit with the bulls is reminiscent of Jackass Number Two, and what a great movie that was.
