It looks like Robert De Niro will be joining Joaquin Phoenix's Joker movie

BUT WHO IS HE GOING TO BE???

It looks like Robert De Niro will be joining Joaquin Phoenix's Joker movie
24 July 2018

There’s a movie coming out all about The Joker, that bloke who Batman hates, and it’s got Joaquin Phoenix in it, playing him. That’s Joaquin Phoenix, not Jared Leto, who played him in Suicide Squad. You see, this story will run separately from the DC Extended Universe (Justice League and all that jazz, Battfleck et al), and will be a different take on the source material. Which is absolutely, not confusing at all.

In fact, it’s probably not going to look like a comic book movie at all - we’re going the noir route here. Like, we’ve got Martin Scorsese - king of the crime movie - on board as executive producer, and a story most likely based on The Killing Joke, which takes a look at what The Joker was up to before he fell in a barrel of chip fat or whatever it was that made him look like a clown.

And now we’ve got Robert De Niro potentially joining the cast - it’s like Goodfellas all over! Supposedly, the veteran actor is drawn to the fact that the film is looking to be tonally similar to an ‘80s crime noir movie, and according to Variety, he is in talks to play a talk show host that’s partly responsible for The Joker’s rapid descent into mania.

In The Killing Joke, Jokey Boy was a failed stand-up comedian, and it looks as though that’s the route the film - called Joker - is taking. Phoenix spoke to Collider about the film, which starts filming in September:

“It feels unique, it is its own world in some ways, and maybe, mostly, it scares the f**king shit out of me or something. It might as well be the thing that scares you the most!

“I think more than anything, and probably the most important thing, is Todd seems very passionate about it and very giving, and so that’s exciting. I think, underneath the excitement of these films, and the size of them, there are these incredible characters that are dealing with real-life struggles.”

This sounds… good? Will this be… good? This will probably be… good.
