New Trailer For Cymbeline

New Trailer For Cymbeline
02 September 2014

There's a reason you haven't seen a decent film adaptation of the Shakespearean tragic romance Cymbeline - no one has made one. Michael Almereyda is hoping to change all that.

Telling the dark tale of a romance between a British king's daughter and a lowborn member of his court, Cymbeline is heavy on absurdities and confusion. Romeo and Juliet it certainly is not.

Having done a solid job with his 2000 adaptation of Hamlet, Almereyda has assembled a weighty cast to do the Bard's unfilmable work a good go. Starring Ethan Hawke, Ed Harris, Penn Badgley, Milla Jovovich, Dakota Johnson, and Anton Yelchin, Almereyda has swapped out Romans and Celts in favour of contemporary tensions between motorbike gangs and cops.

The first trailer appears promising, brimming with weighty prose and gritty confrontation. We'll have to wait until 30 January 2015 to see if Almereyda has succeeded where no one else has bothered.
