Ryan Reynolds will star in ‘Six Underground’, directed by Michael Bay, and some more names have just been announced

Netflix has come a long way since jumping into the original content game, and that now goes for films as well as TV series.

Since the 2015 release of Idris Elba film Beasts of No Nation, the first Netflix original movie, a further 50 have followed, including Stephen King adaptation Gerald’s Game and The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected).

The biggest-budget release to date has been the Will Smith vehicle Bright, which was less than popular with critics but still did well enough to earn itself a sequel.

Bright cost in the region of $90m, but upcoming release Six Underground puts that in the shade with a $150m (£112m) budget. And when you see some of the names attached, it’s clear that Netflix is going big on the 2019 release.

First things first: Michael Bay is attached as director. Bay’s name is synonymous with big-budget cinema and no shortage of massive explosions, with the 53-year-old having worked on the Transformers franchise and Pearl Harbor, among other projects.

The writing team has good form, too: Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick worked together on the two Deadpool films and are also poised to write a follow-up to their 2009 cult hit Zombieland.

Ryan Reynolds is one of the stars of the film, which Narcity reports is about “six billionaires who fake their own death in order to become a team of elites with plans to take down bad guys,” reuniting the Canadian actor with his Deadpool collaborators.

The remainder of the cast has now been announced, too, and there’s plenty to get excited about.

Wernick and Reese will team up with Reynolds once more

Variety reports that Dave Franco is now attached, following his starring role in multi-award nominated The Disaster Artist, and he’s not the only new face confirmed for Six Underground.

Other cast members include Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (Sicario: Day of the Soldado), Adria Arjona (Pacific Rim Uprising) and Corey Hawkins (BlacKkKlansman).

According to Variety, filming is due to begin in late July, with Six Underground set for a 2019 release.
