29 August 2018

We’re eight films into the main Star Wars franchise and you know what… we’re still properly pumped for the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX.

It’s scheduled to be released in December 2019 and will be the third and final installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

And to add to our already frothing-at-the-mouth levels of excitement, it’s now been announced that former Doctor Who star Matt Smith will be joining the cast.

That’s right – the Time Lord himself is crossing over into that other epic space-age franchise.

Great news! But who is Smith going to play?

According to Variety, sources say The Crown star is joining Star Wars: Episode IX, which is currently in production in the UK. It’s unknown at the minute whether he’ll be on the side of the rebels or the evil empire.

Smith will be joined by returning cast members Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver, as well as newcomers Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Dominic Monaghan, and Naomi Ackie.

Mark Hamill will also be returning as Luke Skywalker while Carrie Fisher will be featured as Leia Organa, using previously unreleased footage from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Star Wars fans are fully on-board with the latest casting announcement and they even had some thoughts on which character Smith might be playing in the new film:
