Will it be the 'Terminator 2' of superhero movies?

'Deadpool 2' is shaping up to be better than the original, according to test screenings
21 March 2018

If you’re lucky, you’ll have been to a test screening before - it’s where select audiences are shown a film way before it’s due to come out, sometimes before the film is even properly finished (there might be a bit of in-progress CGI-work, say). They do this because if it turns out that everyone hates it, they’ve got time to try and fix it before it’s due to come out.

Related note: I had nothing bad to say about Deuce Bigalow: European Gigalo when I went to a test screening - it was the perfect movie already.

Anyway, some lucky suckers got to go and see Deadpool 2 ahead of its release date this May, and despite early reports that it was testing badly, it seems, in fact, that it is not. The Hollywood Reporter has reported (as it is wont to do, hence the name, etc) that its test scores have come back higher than the first movie, which reached a pretty respectable high of 91.

Deadpool 2, on the other hand, has managed to land itself a 98, which is pretty damn impressive, I think you’ll agree. This latest score comes after test screenings a few months ago, which supposedly warranted re-shoots. Re-shoots, it must be said, that were not as a result of bad scores, according to Brianna Hildebrand, who plays Negasonic Teenage Warhead in the film. She said at MCM Comic Con:

“It was nothing that had gone wrong. I think it’s a common misconception too – that people think that reshoots are to fix things that people didn’t like. A lot of the time, reshoots are to add more of the things that people loved. [Filmmakers] watch their films again and are like ‘better fix that’.

“I don’t know how much I can say about that. Usually films hate it when you talk about their reshoots – solely because people think that it’s because the film was bad for the test audience – but it was all good.”

Good news then, I think, providing the test screenings weren’t full of dogs or an equally idiotic animal - can’t trust them with movie opinions, all they care about is scenes with cats in. Ignore their opinions, always.
