There's a general rule about films based on video games: DON'T. Just DON'T. It didn't work with Super Mario Bros., Tomb RaiderDead or AliveFar CryBlooddrayneStreet Fighter... you get the idea.

But one Michael Fassbender believes Assassin's Creed will run against the grain of gaming adaptations.

Producer and star of the new film, Assassin's Creed sees him reunite with Macbeth director Justin Kurzel, in a time-bending stealthy action flick based (loosely) on Ubisoft's hugely successful time-bending stealthy action game series.

Upon surviving his faked execution, Callum Lynch (Fassbender) discovers he has been acquired by a secretive firm, intent on accessing information held in his 'genetic memory' regarding his ancestor, Aguilar - a 15th century Spaniard who was part of a mysterious society of assassins. He must access his ancestor's memories and use his deadly skills to battle the powerful Templar organization.

In short: runny, jumpy, stabby brilliance.

Assassin's Creed arrives in UK cinemas on 30 December
