Is Drax the best character in 'Infinity War'? VERY POSSIBLY

One of the funniest moments in 'Avengers: Infinity War' was improvised by Dave Bautista
10 May 2018

Regardless of what you’ve heard about all the pain and sadness and oh my God why are they doing this to us, actually, Infinity War is very funny. And it’s needed - when you’ve got so much darkness, it’s nice to lighten things up a tad now and again. Most of the time, these japes are courtesy of characters like Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Peter Quill and maybe a bit of Tony Stark, but the jammy hogger of all the best lines is undoubtedly Drax, from Guardians Of The Galaxy.

Dave Bautista’s deadpan delivery is second-to-none, and each line is gold - he steals every single scene he’s in. Among a host of brilliant moments in a packed movie, it’s come to light that one of the biggest laughs was as a result of an off-the-cuff improvisation on his behalf.

Infinity War’s screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely told Yahoo! Entertainment:

“The script only said, ‘Where is Gamora?’ ‘I’ll do you even better: Who is Gamora?’

“And then one day Bautista just goes, ‘I’ll do you one better: Why is Gamora?’

“It’s like, ‘OK, you’re very good at your job.’”

If you’ve seen the film, it’s guaranteed that that scene went down well - it’s a doozy.

Drax and his mates out on the town

But Bautista’s mastery of the character didn’t come straight away - back in 2017 he spoke to CBR.com about how he finally found his groove:

“What I usually do when I get a script is I read my dialogue first, I just didn’t really get the jokes. I just didn’t think Drax was that significant in the film, and I don’t find myself funny at all. So I remember reading, and I’m just sitting there not laughing. Like, wow, it was disappointing because I thought Drax was going to be so much more.

“When we sat down for the table read, is when it clicked. It clicked in my head. For one, I could hear everybody doing their own parts, and it was just so funny and deep, and some of it sad. But also, when I would say my lines and people would laugh, it would kind of start to make sense.”

Thank God he sussed it, because we wouldn’t have one of the greatest characters in the MCU if it wasn’t for our Dave.
