We thought it would never happen: a horror remake that was actually really rather great. But Zack Snyder's fast and furious take on George A Romero's cult classic Dawn of the Dead emerged as one of the best zombie movies of recent years.

As the film turns 10, yes 10, we have a list of interesting tidbits that you might not know about the film.

1. The set for Ana (Sarah Polley) and Luis's (Louis Ferreira) bedroom was actually a small room at the same mall that the rest of the film was made. It was located in Ontario, Canada.

2. George A. Romero had mixed thoughts on the film. "It was better than I expected," he said. "The first 15, 20 minutes were terrific, but it sort of lost its reason for being. It was more of a video game. I'm not terrified of things running at me; it's like Space Invaders. There was nothing going on underneath."

3. There was going to be a sequel called Army of the Dead which was co-written by Zack Snyder and would have been produced by him but it was later cancelled. It was supposed to be set in Las Vegas where the city had been contained.

4. Ving Rhames was so keen to be involevd that as soon as he heard the film was in production, he got in contact with the producers to see about a role.

5. The filmmakers used real amputees to play zombies with missing limbs.

6. While building the set, the majority of stores had to be fictitious due to legal issues. There were two exceptions to this - Panasonic and Roots, a Canadian clothes brand. They demolished the mall after the film wrapped.

7. There are three actors from the original who cameo in the remake: Ken Foree (Peter in the original) plays an evangelist, Scott H. Reiniger (Roger in the original) plays an army general and Tom Savini (Blades in the original and special effects guru) plays the Los Angeles County Sheriff.

8. The word zombie isn't used once in the film. Instead, the characters generally refer to them as "those things".

9. One of the clothing stores in the mall is called Gaylen Ross, which is named after the actress who played Fran in the original.

10. While there was so much blood used on set that a blood cart was nearby at all times, title designer Kyle Cooper used real blood in the opening and closing credit sequences.

11. The budget for the film was $26 million, which was entirely recouped in the opening weekend. The film went on to make $102 million worldwide.

12. Two well-known TV stars crop up in roles before they were recognisable. Michael Kelly, now known as Frank's assistant in House of Cards, plays CJ while Ty Burrell, famous for his role in Modern Family, is Steve.
