Over the years, the ShortList Film Club has prided itself on giving you – our most handsome and beloved of readers – the chance to see the greatest movies the world of cinema has to offer.

From huge Oscar-winning mega-hits to criminally underrated cult classics, our free screening programme has been a sumptuous cinematic banquet, hungrily gobbled up by greedy gourmands of the silver screen.

And there simply couldn’t be a grander, more fitting finale to the finest film club known to humankind than ShortList cover star Viggo Mortensen’s latest heart-warming ROFL-fest, Green Book.

Set in the early 1960s, this little-known true story achieves the
 nigh-on impossible by
taking on an incredibly serious subject – deep-set societal racism in the segregated American South – and hammering its message home, not just in a sensitive and moving way, but with laugh after belly-aching laugh.

Mortensen, as you’ve never seen (or heard) him before, plays Tony Lip. Tony is a working-class Italian-American nightclub brute, forced by circumstance to take a gig as a chauffeur for Dr Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali), a highly educated African-American classical pianist.

The mismatched couple then embark on an eye-opening, danger-addled concert tour of the Deep South, developing a deeply moving, uplifting and hilarious bond along the way.

Green Book has already been a huge success in America, where it’s recently won three prestigious Golden Globe awards, namely Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali.

And rightly so; with racial tensions in the US as bad as they’ve been in decades, Green Book’s funny yet powerful portrayal of an against-all-odds male friendship feels particularly poignant right now.
