Could Bradley Cooper snatch an Oscar?

We’ve seen Lady Gaga at the Oscars before. After all, she was nominated for Best Song at the 2016 Awards (for ‘The Hunting Ground’s ‘Til It Happens To You’).

But this year, going by early reactions to her first lead movie performance in A Star Is Born, pundits are suggesting we could see her up for more top awards.

Gaga plays Ally, a bar singer who’s long since given up on her dreams of hitting the big time – until addiction-troubled rock musician Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) stumbles into her bar, hears her voice, realises her talent and falls in love with her.

What follows is partly a rags-to-rhinestones narrative, partly love story and partly a ‘cost of fame’ melodrama. A Star Is Born will take you on a hugely emotional journey with even huger tunes — all performed live on-screen by Gaga and Cooper.

Just as remarkable is that not only is this critic-wowing movie Gaga’s first leading role on the big screen; it’s also Cooper’s directorial debut. After years of working with the likes of David O. Russell and Clint Eastwood, Cooper has clearly been picking up a few tricks.

But while it’s up close and personal, this isn’t by any means a small movie. Shooting at LA’s legendary Greek Theatre and Coachella to namecheck a few, Cooper has captured the scale of stadium performing.

And those songs (co-written by Cooper and Gaga with Lukas ‘son of Willie’ Nelson and a handful of artists) are big enough to fill those stadiums: especially when they’re fuelled by Lady Gaga’s knock-out vocals. If the speculation is correct, this star will shine brightly during the upcoming awards season.
