‘Harry Potter’ translated into Scots is absolutely brilliant

Harry Potter is obviously one of the most famous and most beloved children’s book series of all time. It inspired a generation of young readers, we’ve been hooked on the franchise’s spellbinding films for years and we’ll soon by playing Pokémon GO-style Harry Potter VR games.

And now Scots speakers will be able to enjoy the first of J.K. Rowling’s books in their native tongue after the dialect became the 80th translation.

Matthew Fitt, a Scots expert and writer who translated the novel, told the BBC: “I wanted tae dae this for a lang time but kent I wanted tae get it richt. I’m that honoured tae be the Scots translator o this warld-famous Harry Potter buik and chuffed tae ma bitts that Scots speakers, baith young and no sae young, can noo read the novel again, this time in oor gallus braw Mither Tongue.”

Scots has been spoken in Scotland for several centuries and is found today throughout the Lowlands and Northern Isles. It’s spoken by 1.5 million people in Scotland.

And Harry Potter, of course, has a strong connection to Scotland - author J.K. Rowling wrote the books in cafés around Edinburgh and she still lives in the country with her family.
