Two, four, six, eight, who do we appreciate? Beautiful and alluring British actresses of course. Okay, that might not roll off the tongue, but one peek at these talented thesps and we reckon you won’t be complaining.

1. Gemma Arterton
Having shot to fame as the eponymous Tess in the BBC adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Arterton, and her shapely pins, is currently wowing audiences everywhere in Tamara Drewe. And let’s not forget the DVD release of Prince of Persia. Not that we’re stalking her or anything…
2. Rosamund Pike
Although the dictionary doesn’t mention Rosamund Pike under its English rose entry, it should do. This Oxbridge educated beauty is currently starring in Made in Dagenham. She wasn’t by the way – made in Dagenham we mean.
3. Emily Blunt
Thankfully, no relation to singing monstrosity James, Emily Blunt has taken Tinseltown by storm. Her performances in The Devil Wears Prada, Charlie Wilson’s War and The Young Victoria have displayed her ample talents marvellously.
4. Rebecca Hall
We first spotted the stately Rebecca Hall in the throwaway Starter For Ten, but it was her performances in Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Frost/Nixon that really turned our heads. Currently starring in The Town opposite Ben Affleck. Lucky, Ben.
5. Alice Eve
The daughter of acting types Trevor (Waking the Dead) Eve and Sharon Maughan (her out of those Nescafe Gold Blend adverts from the late eighties), Alice was born to tread the boards. Something she has done rather splendidly in Starter For Ten, opposite Rebecca Hall, Big Nothing and, more recently in Sex And The City 2.
6. Rosie Huntington-Whitely
Let’s face it, it’s going to take someone mighty special to usurp the bountiful talents of Megan Fox. Thankfully, Devon lass Huntington-Whitely has the skills to pay the bills after it was announced she was replacing Fox in the forthcoming Transformers 3 flick. Not that we’re getting any ideas – she’s currently stepping out with Jason Statham.
7. Anna Friel
The mere mention of Anna Friel’s name will always put a spring into the step of men of a certain dotage. But Friel is no one-trick lesbian snogging wonder – she’s conquered Hollywood, as her starring role opposite Will Ferrell in Land of the Lost attests.
8. Saffron Burrows
As controversial as she is beautiful, Saffron Burrows is one of the most colourful and outspoken actresses of her generation. Openly bisexual and a vehement socialist, Burrows is currently starring in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. She can arrest us anytime.
9. Thandie Newton
They don’t come any more sophisticated than Thandie Newton. Like Rosamund Pike, she’s something of a clever clogs, having been educated at Cambridge; she’s also a BAFTA-winning actress (for her role in Paul Haggis’ Crash), but, most importantly – well, for the purposes of this conversation – she’s very easy on the eye.
10. Rachel Weisz
Proof that 40 is the new 30 is provided by the enduring appeal of Weisz. Her captivating looks are as powerful now as they were when we first clapped eyes on her back in the mid-nineties. A yummy mummy indeed.
