Live Music Recognition App in Development

HERO1.jpg

It is no exaggeration to say that Shazam has completely changed our lives. Few things in life were as frustrating as desperately trying to find out what that song is that's playing in the background of a café - and it saved us all from being ridiculed by a DJ if we went up to ask what 'this toe-tapping tune' was.

But while Shazam is impressive, this could potentially blow your mind. Music cataloging service Gracenote has unveiled an early prototype of an app which could do the same for live music. Don't know the band, or don't know this particular B-side they're playing? Just hold up your phone and it will tell you.

The app is tentatively named MusicID Live (might need something snappier people) and, amazingly, was built in just 24 hours at a hackathon preceding the Outside Lands music and arts festival in San Francisco. Gracenote is now aiming to bring the gadget to market early next year.

Watch the video below, and if you can explain how it works, you'll be far, far better people than us. I think we should all just accept the fact that it is magic. Pure magic.
