Just when you were beginning to worry you'd have nothing to do this autumn...

Gamescom has opened its doors in Cologne, Germany, showing off the progress that's been made on games we first glimpsed back at E3.

From console-shifting first person shooters to super-hyped sequels, these are games set to brighten your nights this autumn, winter and beyond (because delays can - and probably will - happen).

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Nintendo has spilt further details on Link's latest adventure, with this latest footage showing the young scamp getting stuck into living a life of domestic bliss in a woodcutter's hut. There's cooking and chopping and a whole bunch of cute Nintendo stuff. You'll love it.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

A game that's actually getting released in a matter of days (23 August), Deus Ex: Mankind Divided picks up from the events of 2011's Human Revolution: humanity is deeply suspicious of its augmented population, with tension growing between those with and those without robotic enhancements. Things are, predictably, being controlled by shady men in dark rooms pulling political strings, and it's up to you to get to the bottom of it all.

Battlefield 1

Battlefield is going back to the beginning of modern warfare (pun intended) with its latest outing. Expect massive battles, insane graphics and sand everywhere.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole

If you haven't played South Park: The Stick of Truth, what on earth have you been doing with yourself? It's a role playing game with all the humour of an extended episode of the acclaimed animated series, and every bit as fun as it sounds. This sequel, The Fractured But Whole, takes a stab at the world of super heroes. We can't wait to play it.

Injustice 2

Super heroes/villains smacking the snot out of each other. What's not to love? Okay, how about some special moves that see you throw people through walls and rewards of new armour once you stand over your fallen foe? Thought so.

Metal Gear Survive

Forget most things you know about the Metal Gear series - Survive is going to do things differently.

It's a multiplayer co-op experience with an emphasis on stealth. Teams of four will have to work together using a variety of weapons (it's not just gunplay any more) to survive in alternative worlds filled with horrible creatures. Stab zombies, shoot monsters, get back home, have a great time.

Destiny: The Collection

All of the Destiny expansion packs in one neat package. It'll also give new players a handy boost to catch up with people who've been playing it for the last two years. They still won't know what's going on though...

Resident Evil 7

Giant decaying mansion? Check. Things going bump in the night? Check. A VR headset being thrown across the living room in utter terror? Yep, we've got ourselves more Resident Evil 7 footage.

WatchDogs 2

Some new insights into the multiplayer offerings of the new WatchDogs title. Features loads of hacking. And swearing. Which is a bit jarring.

Mafia III

A healthy wallop of story gets shown off in the latest trailer for the third instalment of the Mafia series. Lincoln Clay has returned from Vietnam to find that corruption has gripped his home of New Bordeaux - and he wants part of the cut.

Gears of War 4

This is what Gears looks like in shiny 4K - an experience owners of the new Xbox One S will get when the game launches on 11 October. It's like old Gears, but the blood is even more captivating/gross.

ReCore

Do you enjoy a good bit of puzzle solving with mechanical buddies? Then you'll want to check out this Indy title from the makers of Metroid Prime, headed to Xbox One on 13 September.

Titanfall 2

In addition to its core multiplayer offeringTitanfall 2 will give players a whole new single player campaign experience, shown off in some detail in this new trailer.

For Honor

Viking v Samurai v Knight. It's the classic pud debate, and we can't wait to play this game to find out the ultimate answer.

PES 17

Football! With players that look like real people! Look at them! Aren't they pretty?
