Nintendo brings back World Championship event

Time to dig the SNES out of the attic and stick on that "Movie gym training montage playlist" you always knew you'd find use for - Nintendo is resurrecting is World Championship!

Last held in 1990, the gaming championships of old used to see gamers flock to 29 regional events around the US to compete in rounds of Super Mario, Tetris and Rad Racer - playing on cartridges that can now fetch a hefty sum on eBay.

Disappointingly, the new World Championship is set to continue the rather limited vision of global membership: regional events are restricted to the US, before finalists compete in Los Angeles on 14 June, two days before the opening of the E3 event.

The announcement was made in typically Nintendo fashion, with the following video hinting at the potential inclusion of classic Nintendo titles in the contest.

Keep an ear out for news on the first regional events if you fancy booking a flight to compete. Meanwhile, get those thumb exercises going.
