It sounds like 'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered' will be getting a standalone release in the summer

Nothing against last year’s Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, with its wall-running and space battles and baddie Jon Snow, but perhaps the biggest draw of that game (at least the eye-wateringly expensive premium version) was the fact that it had a remaster of the mighty Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare bundled with it.

A game that single-handedly redefined the first-person-shooter genre for the then next generation of consoles and crafted an unreasonably addictive online multiplayer mode that would be aped for years to come, CoD4 is, for many, the high point of the series.

But great as those memories of hammering Search and Destroy until 3am and getting consistently annihilated by squeaky American pre-teens with far too many top-tier swear words in their vocabularies might be, the nostalgia pang wasn’t quite enough to convince a lot of gamers to pony up for Infinite Warfare’s priciest option at the time. It felt a bit needless on Activision’s part not to just release the souped-up 2007 shooter as a downloadable standalone, but the consensus was that it would probably happen eventually.

While there’s nothing in the way of official confirmation, a since removed listing for the game on rental site Gamefly suggests that it might be happening after all.

Fan site Charlie Intel grabbed a screenshot before the game’s addition was swiftly yanked down, which included a release date of 20 June.

PlayStation 4 is the only platform mentioned, which would indicate that – if indeed the listing was accurate – Sony will be getting initial exclusivity as part of their deal with the publisher. Gamefly reported that an Xbox One version was down to become available a month later.

Again, none of this has been announced by the people that really matter yet, but it’s a no-brainer for Activision. Who wouldn’t want to give that legendary single-player campaign another run-through while they wait for the series’ return to its World War II roots later this year?
