Will this Kickstarter revolutionise the humble keyboard?

keys2.jpg

While computers have got smaller, phones smarter and watches infuriatingly complex, the good old QWERTY keyboard has remained largely unchanged. Sure its elements have altered over the years, moving from a metal build to plastic to touch screens, but the layout of those letters has been identical since the early 1870s.

The Model 01 is looking to bring your keys bang up to date. With a wooden keyboard.

The creation of Keyboard.io, this bizarre two part design is the result of two and a half years of work. A QWERTY layout still dictates the position of the keys, but its ergonomic shape is one of the most practical we've seen.

Formed from two solid blocks of maple wood, with backlit tactile mechanical keyswitches, the Model 01 is able to be used in flat, tripod, tented or split positions (which you can see below), to suit whatever angle of typing you prefer.

There are also some unconventional keys thrown into the mix, including a customisable "Any" key and a palm key that changes the properties of various buttons (H,J,K, and L all become arrow keys, for instance).

Currently smashing its Kickstarter goal, you can order a Model 01 for around £190, with first models due to ship in April 2016.

Because real keyboards have curves.
