ShortList’s expert on the new tablet

The iPad 3 predictions

Don’t buy an iPad. Or at least, if you’re planning to buy one, hold off. All signs (and internet rumours) point to a March release date for the latest incarnation. But what improvements will you see? We asked editor of Stuff Will Findlater to make his in-the-know predictions.

Better screen resolution

“The iPad 2 had the same screen as the original, but displays have moved on since 2010. We’re expecting double the pixel counts on both axes so the iPad jumps beyond the HD capabilities of any other tablet currently on the market.”

Faster processor

“A quad-core processor, rather than the current dual-core, is the next logical step. This will provide the necessary power for the improved screen, but also keeps Apple competitive with the latest Android tablets. Graphically it will be close to the Xbox 360.”

No External inputs

“A popular prediction is an SD card slot, but Apple has never let us expand the memory of its iOS products. As soon as you introduce someone else’s products, the performance and quality is out of Apple’s control. I can’t see it happening.”

Improved Camera

“The iPad 2’s camera is worse than the iPhone 4’s, never mind the 4S’s. Without bulking up the entire unit, it’ll be tough to get it to the 4S’s level, but I’m sure there will be a higher resolution image sensor.”

Siri & iTV

“An improved version of Siri, which isn’t on iPads yet, makes sense. I’m also hoping for an indication of Apple’s plans for iTV, ideally an app to live stream TV.”
