Beats Cofounder's New Headphones

Steve Lamar is not a man given to twiddling his thumbs. Rather than some time out to count his share of the $3 billion Apple spent on Beats by Dre, the ousted cofounder of the vastly successful headphone group has used his new-found freedom to create a new audio brand - ROAM.

The first offering from Lamar's fledgling company isn't the Dre-a-like we'd expected: the ROAM Ropes are in-ear, noise cancelling earphones that pack some impressive technical tricks.

Tethered by a loop that hangs around the back of the wearer's head (think your grandma's glasses string, but with a shade more style), a small pendant hangs from the main cord of the Rope. Inside this small silver box are the noise cancelling electronics, digital sound processor and a rechargeable battery - allowing wearers to go cable-free with in-built Bluetooth. The pendant also contains two 3.5mm jacks to let you share your music with the poor sod stuck next to you on the bus.

Smartphone users will also be able to download the accompanying ROAM EQ app - a graphic equaliser that will let you tinker with the balance of your audio, or adjust your tone to a variety of pre-sets.

Set to arrive in November for around £185, the ROAM Ropes will be available in shades of black or fetching orange ($100 of which will go toward the 'Stand Up To Cancer' charity).
