A definitive ranking of the 10 best looking trainers of all time

03-05-2017_adidas_sambaog_madeingermany_vintagewhite_bb2587_sp_1.jpg

Everyone likes trainers but sadly not all trainers were created equal.

Not equally comfy, not equally priced, and certainly not equally beautifully: for while some excite the eyes and stir up something wild in your belly – in a good way – some trainers just make you feel a bit sad. Like the ugliest apple in the supermarket, you know someone will have it but you? No. Not you.

We shun those bad, ugly, ill-conceived-and-uncomfortable apples for the pinkest ladies around, the most beautiful trainers of all time:

NIKE HUARACHE

“Oh, but they look like someone wrapped a pair of Crocs around a plain white sneaker and only people with huge muscles and ultra-manicured eyebrows” you say. To which we say, okay, yeah, maybe that’s a tiny bit merited, but the retro-futurist style which hasn’t changed in nearly thirty years is still a piece of design wonderment and they look good no matter how big your feet are (something that can’t be said for some...)

OI POLLOI x REEBOK NPC II

2

(via Oi Polloi)

A slightly vintaged pair of padded white trainers. That’s… That’s basically it. This re-release of the classic trainer shoe (a personal obsession parlayed into a business proposal by Oi Polloi co-founder Nigel Lawson) drew a very positive response for its fit, comfort, and double-take “what is that? Is that a Reebok? I’ve… I’ve never seen those before. What are they? Where are they from? Will you take cash?” cool.

ADIDAS STAN SMITH

3

What they lack in bells and whistles, they more than make up for it timeless chic, beloved by everyone from fashion designers to lazy dads who haven’t given up hope yet. There’s beauty in a blank slate.

VANS OLD SKOOL

4

(via Office)

If they’re good enough for every stylist, photographer, celebrity, and skateboarder ever, they’re good enough for us.

DREAMWORKS x DIADORA N9000 “SHREK”

5

(via Diadora)

One of the most beautiful trainers of all time was a tie-in for a movie about a computer-generator swamp ogre and his donkey pal and created by a brand often dismissed as nineties trash. Honestly, who would’ve thought it?

NIKE AIR MAX 95 “STASH”

6

(via Sneaker News)

Designed by then-rookie Sergio Lozano, the 95 is a typical ugly-cool trainer: a delicious clomper with a lot going on that somehow – and honestly we’re not quite sure how – manages to work with outfits. The “Stash” was its pinnacle: a colour-chart of icy water and galaxy skies on the outersole. What’s not to love?

ADIDAS SAMBA OG “MADE IN GERMANY”

7

(via END Clothing)

Never has a trainer felt more vintage or vital as adidas’ iconic Samba, a flat-out design classic that exudes German practicality and really, really nice trainers style.

CNCPTS x NEW BALANCE “THE KENNEDYS”

8

(via HYPEBEAST)

Nobody does collaborations better than New Balance – they’re fat silhouettes giving incoming designers plenty of loose material to work their magic on – and these 1500s by CNCPTS are possibly our favourite: selling like hot-cakes, the off white suede and stars-and-stripes colourways just work an absolute treat.

ADIDAS ULTRA-BOOST 3.0 “TRIPLE-BLACK”

9

(via adidas)

Coveted like the Holy Grail, favoured over the Yeezy by many, and beloved by us as being “very nice indeed”. With a mesh construction and matte black overlay cages, its breathable and comfortable and stable, but more than that: it’s the stealth of trainers. This is some secret, double-special ops – TRIPLE! – and look like you’ve just nabbed it out the briefcase of Jack Bauer. We defy anyone to not look fantastic in a pair of these babies.

NIKE MAG

10

We had to.
